Marlins English Language Test: Frequently Asked Questions

Marlins English Language Training (ELT) products are specifically designed to assess and develop English language competency levels for people who work in the maritime world.

When working on a boat, knowledge of specific maritime vocabulary and terms is indispensable as often ships are staffed and operated by multinational crews and auxiliary shore staff. Effective communication safeguards the protection of the vessels and, more importantly, of the crew.

There are three different tests that you can do, depending on your position:

  • ICS Marlins English Language Test for Seafarers
  • Marlins English Language Test for Offshore Workers
  • Marlins English Language Test for Cruise Ship Staff

Each exam follows the same format, but with vocabulary and situations which mirror the English you’ll often encounter in your job.

If you’re planning to take the test:

  1. Familiarize yourself with maritime English terms. Knowing industry-specific language will help.
  2. Practice general English skills, especially listening and reading comprehension, which are key components of the test.
  3. Take practice tests if available. This will give you a feel for the test format and the types of questions you can expect.

Remember, the purpose of the test is to ensure that seafarers can communicate effectively in English in various maritime situations, so it’s essential to be well-prepared to ensure safety and efficient operations at sea.
